MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. -- April Ross took the title of the AVP Manhattan Beach Open champions for the 4th time this summer even with a different partner. This time, the Olympic silver medalist and 3 time USC All-American April Ross won the title with Jennifer Fopma to win the Manhattan Beach Open championship on Sunday, August 16, 2015. Lat year she won with Kerri Walsh Jennings. The Costa Mesa tandem of Ross and Jennifer Fopma beat Nicole Branagh (Torrance) and Jenny Kropp (Manhattan Beach) 21-15, 26-24.
Earlier this summer, Ross and Walsh Jennings won the New Orleans Open last May 24. USC All-American Jennifer Kessy and Emily Day won the New York City Open last July 19, and Ross and Fopma took home the Seattle Open crown on August 9. Ross and Kerri Walsh-Jennings will resume playing together this week at the ASICS World Series of Beach Volleyball in Long Beach, has won 10 of the last 11 AVP tournaments. Walsh-Jennings skipped the Manhattan Beach Open while recovering from a shoulder injury.
In the men's Phil Dalhausser also with a different partner won the title. Dalhausser took the 2014 Manhattan Beach Open with Sean Rosenthal. Unfortunately, the teamates split last month, Dalhausser got a new partner Nick Lucena. The two didn't played together since October of 2005 and was coming off a 2nd place finish at the Seattle Open the previous week.
Dalhausser and Lucena sweep the game to defeat Tri Bourne and John Hyden, 21-19, 21-17 in the men’s final.
The AVP tour continues in two weeks and will make stops in Chicago (Aug. 28-30) and Cincinnati (Sept. 4-6), before concluding the season with the AVP Championships at Huntington Beach (Sept. 11-13).
