Miami's Model Volleyball Tournament

The 7th annual LeSutra Model Volleyball Miami Beach Tournament held on South Beach is a benefit for the Irie Foundation. It is a friendly match between top South Beach modeling agencies and their special guests runs that was held on Saturday and Sunday, February 20 to 21, 2016, at Lummus Park, Eighth Street and Ocean Drive, in Miami Beach. The event was hosted by YesJulz and there were performances by DNCE, the Joe Jonas-led band that recently released the auspicious and ubiquitous single "Cake by the Ocean."

University of Washington Sand volleyball Sweeps Oregon

The University of Washington Sand volleyball team continues their winning ways as they sweep the Oregon Ducks. Then Huskies went 5-0 against the Ducks last Saturday, extending their winning streak to 5 games.

Huskies Head coach Keegan Cook said that they have concentrated in setting the ball and in  transition attacking.

“Setting is a big deal in beach volleyball, putting yourself in good position to attack,” Cook said. “That was one of our primary competitive goals this year and we did that.”

Courtney Schwan and sophomore Bailey Tanner help the team take the first set 21-12. Then they were able to establish a 4-0 run to win the 2nd set 21-14. In the 3rd set it was Justice Magraw and Melanie Wade who made the big plays with a 21-11, 21-16 win. Justice Magraw and Melanie Wade followed up by helping the team win the 3rd and 4th set 21-11, 21-16 respectively.

Next weekend Huskies will end their season in California for a doubleheader Saturday, St. Mary’s at 9 a.m. before a noon match-up against California. Then on Sunday they will be in the Stanford Invitational.

High School Girls Volleyball Roundup

The 2014 state volleyball championship matchups are now underway after the Class A group semifinals have been decided last Friday.

Class A:

Novi 3, Grand Haven 1 (18-25, 20-25, 26-24, 25-20, 15-12)

Ranked 2nd Novi Wildcats were able to complete a come-from-behind win against Grand Haven they rallied from 2-0 down to win three straight sets and defeat No. 3 Grand Haven.

Romeo 3, Temperance Bedford 0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-9)

Romeo dominated the Temperance Bedford controlling three straing sets to come with a win. Gia Milana of Romeo had a big game with 19 kills, 3 Aces, 7 digs, and 1 block.


Class D:

Battle Creek St. Philip 3, Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes 0 (30-28, 25-21, 25-20)

Abby McKinzie helped the St. Philip secure a 3 set sweep against Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes with 17 kills and 11 digs.

Leland 3, Onaway 2 (10-25, 25-18, 25-20, 21-25, 15-0.3,)

Leland despite losing the first and fourth set, controlled the fifth set to defeat Onaway. After a quick sideout, Erica Ongaro served out the remainder of the fifth set.

AAU beach volleyball tour 2014

The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) said that interests in beach volleyball is rising. According to Gino Grajeda (President and Tour Director of the Southern Pacific Volleyball Committee), there is a significant increase in participants Southern California, that also resulted in rise in the number of beach clubs, tournaments and interest in the IBVL (Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League).

Grace Campbell of Manhattan Beach won championships in the girls 18U division in two consecutive local tournaments said “The competition on the AAU Tour is tremendous." "There are a lot of local girls and the matches are very competitive with most. Now we are getting more teams from out of state who provide good competition. Seeing new talent really keeps up on our toes.”

Campbell is from Marymount High School’s indoor and beach volleyball teams together with her teammate Mia Merino (Tustin) they won their 2nd straight Tachikara Classic championship last June 14, 2014 by beating Samantha Manley and Savannah Rennie from San Diego in the girls 18U championship match in Hermosa Beach. Campbell and Merino won the 16U title in 2013.
