Volleyball coach for teens accused of stalking, raping teenage player
MACEDONIA, Ohio - A coach from Summit County has been arrested his victim accused him of stalking and raping a 16-year-old player of the team he coaches.
Michael Thompson, 30, who coaches a Christian-based volleyball team (Ignite Volleyball Club) for teens is charged with 3 counts of rape, 3 counts of sexual battery, 2 counts of gross sexual imposition and one count of menacing by stalking. He entered a not-guilty plea Friday before a judge in the Summit County Court of Common Pleas. The team is based at the Pinnacle Sports Complex in Twinsburg.
Macedonia Detective Bryan Vince said, "Obviously, he's a predator who has issues. He needs to do some jail time and have himself dealt with." The detective also said that Thompson, forced a girl into sex acts three different times inside his home. The girl was 16 years old when the crimes started.
Thompson was ordered to have no contact with minors, other than his own child.
The rape charges which a 16 year old girl was a victim, occurred initially in June after a volleyball game. Thompson who offer the girl a ride took her to his house instead and asked her to come inside and rape her.
The 2nd incident happened sometime between June and November. Thompson asked the girl to come to his house so that he could apologize for the previous incident, according to the detective. But when the girl arrived at his Vernon Lane home, he attacked her again.
The 3rd rape happened when Thompson's wife asked the girl to babysit their child. The girl was assured that Thompson would be in Columbus at a volleyball tournament so she accepted, but Thompson returned to the house and raped the girl again. The girl was able to record the last attack. Detectives examined the recording and could hear Thompson making advances and sexually assaulting her.
Thompson has also sent half-naked photos of himself stepping out of the shower to at least 6 other former and current players who range in age from 15 to 18 multiple times.
He was released from the Summit County jail after posting $2,500 towards hid bond.
