British-Iranian woman jailed in Iran For Trying to Watch a Volleyball Game on hunger strike
Ghoncheh Ghavami refuse to take food and water to protest delays in confirmation of her sentence. Ghavami, 25 law graduate from London was sentenced to one year in prison in Iran for trying to attend a volleyball game.
Iman Ghavami, her brother said that she is on hunger strike because it is taking too long for the judge to confirm her sentence.
“My family is quite devastated. She is not eating any kind of food or drinking any liquids”, Iman said.
"The case is in limbo … I don’t understand why they don’t want to issue the verdict when they have made the decision. It’s quite concerning for us. They have no legal basis to have her detained”, he added.
Ghoncheh Ghavami was arrested last June when she and other male fans that with her tried to enter Tehran’s Azadi stadium. Iran has a law banning women to attend big sporting events with men.
She was with a small protestors in front of the stadium, participating in their protests and holding up a placard. She was released after a few hours after her arrest, but was detained at a police station when she tried to reclaim the items that had been confiscated.
