Illinois State volleyball team

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State volleyball team split the squad into two teams to compete against each other in the annual red and white volleyball scrimmage. For the second consecutive year, the red team defeated the white team, 2-1 (21-25, 29-27, 25-23).

A competitive match throughout, the red team displayed a strong defensive prowess, tallying 13 total blocks and 55 digs. Despite the white team having a slight edge on the offensive side, the red team often stymied the opposing offense, with junior Emily Orrick contributing 18 digs alongside 2 solo blocks and 7 block assists by junior Emily Schneider.

The white team's offense was orchestrated by junior setter Kaitlyn Early, who tallied 37 assists, while helping senior Brooklyn Hlafka and junior Ciera Lucich compile 10 kills each.

On a day in which the team honored the great Linda Herman before the match, both teams demonstrated strong fundamental play on both the offensive and defensive ends, embodying the spirit of the long and storied history of the volleyball program.

The Redbirds will open the 2013 season on Aug. 30, in Indianapolis, Ind., at the IUPUI Tournament against host IUPUI.
