Beach volleyball Meppelink and Van Gestel bag gold in Argentina

Beach volleyball players Madelein Meppelink and Sophie van Gestel have won the grand slam tournament in Argentina's Corrientes place Saturday. The Hague duo charged in the final in straight sets (21-17 21-19) against Maria Antonelli and Agatha Bednarczuk from Brazil.

Meppelink (23) and Van Gestel (21) started the World Tour season in fourth place in Fuzhou and Shanghai China. They are now firmly in first place.

Wapahani coach Mike Lingenfelter resigns

Mike Lingenfelter earned three state titles for the Wapahani Raiders as a volleyball coach. He resigned as the Wapahani varsity coach on Monday.

“I look at what (baseball coach) Brian Dudley and (boys basketball coach) Matt Luce have done at Wapahani, and those guys have great feeder systems,” Lingenfelter said, “and I feel like I’ve cheated the program in a way because I haven’t been able to dedicate the amount of time necessary to do that.”

BYU Women’s volleyball send 2 players to US A2 program

Brigham Young University Women’s volleyball middle blocker Kathryn LeCheminant and outside hitter Kimberly Dahl have been sent to the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Senior A2 program. The team is compost of 48-player roster. They will undergoe training and will compete in Dallas this summer.

BYU women’s volleyball team (28-4) ended the 2012 NCAA season with a national ranking of 12 after finishing in the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.

LeCheminant averaged 1.01 blocks per set and hit .376, the team’s second highest percentage. Dahl had 165 kills and 38 blocks.

The program runs from June 25-July 4 in conjunction with the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships.

The quarterfinals of the Thanthi TV Asia-Pacific under-21 beach volleyball championship on the sands of Marina has been so far very competative and six teams has been eliminated.

The exciting and crowd favorite match wasthe women’s quarterfinal between Indonesia and Japan-2. Nanda Ragillia and Maria Dwining Tyas of Indonesia prevailed over the Japanese duo of Chiaki Nakamaru-Riha Nakada 18-21, 21-17, 15-13.

Huntington Beach Oilers outlasted Loyola 26-28, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 15-10 to win the Division I final at Santiago Canyon College. TJ Defalco a sophomore had 26 spike attack. Andrew TenBrink had 10 kills, Zach Gates chipped in nine kills and four blocks, Brendan Sander also had nine kills, while Matt Butler had 51 assists for the Oilers. Oilers also defeated the defending champion Mira Costa in the semifinals.

Jackson Bantle and Garrett Mohr had 15 kills apiece for the second-seeded Loyola Cubs, who were denied their 12th CIF title by the slimmest of margins.

"That's the best serving team we've played all year and they took us out of what we wanted to do," Huntington Beach Oilers Coach Craig Pazanti said. "We weren't playing our best in the first three sets but fortunately we were able to block some balls and getting up early in the fifth was critical."

In Division II, junior Jacob Arnitz had 44 kills to power top-seeded Esperanza past third-seeded Santa Barbara, 21-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-17.

In Division III, Robert Adamson had 14 kills and Richard Yu added 11 kills as second-seeded South Pasadena upset top-seeded Camarillo, 27-25, 25-13, 26-24. Owen Yoshimoto finished with 19 kills and eight digs for Camarillo.

In Division IV, top-seeded Cathedral defeated Del Rey League rival Bishop Montgomery, 29-27, 25-16, 18-25, 25-22.

In Division V, top-seeded Saddleback Valley Christian rallied past Westminster La Quinta, 18-25, 25-12, 16-25, 25-18, 15-7 to win its first CIF title.
